Government Interest Burden — Net Interest as a Share of Revenue

🇪🇬 Egypt spends the largest share of its revenue on net interest of any government ranked here: about 60.9% in 2025, on the IMF's figures. Net interest is what a government owes in interest minus what it receives; the table sets it against revenue, because that is what has to pay it.

11 of the 125 governments ranked spend at least a quarter of their revenue on net interest, and 45 spend at least a tenth. A high debt ratio does not by itself mean a heavy bill: Japan owes 205% of GDP and ranks 123rd at 0.5%, while Nigeria owes 36% and ranks 11th at 25.1%. Interest rates, the currency the debt is in and the assets a government holds all sit between the two. The United States ranks 43rd at 10.4%.

No single measure settles it: Egypt leads this table, but among all 135 governments tracked here it ranks 30th by debt-to-GDP, 31st by total debt and 93rd by debt per person.

Not ranked. Receive at least as much interest as they owe, on the IMF's figures: Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg. No usable figure: Kuwait, Syria, Libya, Taiwan, Singapore; each country's page says why.

IMF World Economic Outlook, October 2026, general government, 2025, mostly IMF estimates. Net interest is the primary balance minus the overall balance; revenue is general government revenue.
