When Will the US National Debt Hit $41 Trillion?
The Treasury's total public debt closed at $40.33 trillion on October 14, 2026. The live US counter carries it forward at $60,200 per second, and at that pace it reaches $41 trillion around February 20, 2027, about 187 days after the Treasury recorded $40 trillion on August 18, 2026. As of October 17, 2026 the counter stands at approximately $40.34 trillion.
The pace
$60,200 per second is about $5.20 billion a day and $1.90 trillion a year. The rate comes from the Congressional Budget Office's projection of the fiscal 2026 deficit, a documented departure from the IMF series used for most countries: the US figure follows the Treasury's own daily total so that it can be checked against it. Per resident, $41 trillion is about $119,590, and the debt grows by about $15.17 per person a day.
The debt limit is just above it
The statutory debt limit is $41.1 trillion, set in July 2025 when the 2025 reconciliation law (P.L. 119-21) raised it by $5.0 trillion. It applies to debt subject to limit, which is slightly smaller than the total public debt this site tracks: it is more than 99% of total federal debt, and stood at $40.0 trillion on August 31, 2026, according to the Congressional Research Service. So a $41 trillion total does not by itself mean the limit has been reached. The Congressional Research Service says recent projections have borrowing approaching the limit sometime in fiscal 2027, which runs from October 2026 to September 2027, and that such estimates are subject to considerable uncertainty. When it is reached, the Treasury can use “extraordinary measures” for a time before Congress must act. How the debt ceiling works.
Why the date is softer than it looks
The counter is a straight line at a constant rate. The Treasury's figure is not: it moves in steps as auctions settle and securities mature, and can jump or fall by tens of billions in a day. For $40 trillion this site's model gave August 17; the Treasury's series first closed above the line on August 18. This page will be updated with the Treasury's recorded date for $41 trillion when it happens. Near the debt limit the path can also flatten, because extraordinary measures hold debt subject to limit below the cap until Congress acts.
The US in the world total
The US holds about 34.1% of all government debt in this dataset, but supplies 22.0% of its growth: $60,200 of the world's $274,244 per second. China adds more, about $99,328 per second, and crosses $22 trillion in November 2026.
What comes next
At the current rate the line after this one, $42 trillion, falls around September 2027. That date runs past the fiscal year the rate describes, and CBO's next projections and the debt-limit path will both move it.
